The quarterback read that starts before the snap
A simple pre-snap scan can make short flag football plays feel slower.

Before calling for the ball, quarterbacks can narrow the play by reading leverage, rusher depth, and the safest outlet.
Count the rush first
Before the snap, find the rusher and estimate how quickly pressure will arrive. If the rusher is close and balanced, your first answer should be quick. If the rusher is deeper or shaded, you may have time for a second window.
Read leverage, not just space
A receiver can look open before the snap and still be covered after two steps. Check whether the defender is inside or outside. If the defender is protecting the middle, the outside break may be cleaner. If the defender is sitting outside, the quick in-breaking route may be available.
Build a three-option habit
Before the ball is snapped, name your first throw, your pressure answer, and your throwaway or checkdown. The goal is not to predict everything. The goal is to remove one decision before the play becomes fast.
